This very accurately sums up the school at home experience at my house, at least for my middle schoolers.

Haha yes I can certainly see where this comes in. Calvin and Hobbes has a knack for this sort of thing.

It also applies to Summer job schedules.

Also me as an adult, making time to practice music. 30 seconds is long enough for a warmup

School? Are you trying to raise a bunch of nerds?

Perhaps. Certainly not engineers.

Resorted to straight bribery this morning. “You can have a tiny piece of candy for each page you complete” - so far, so good. It’ll totally backfire next time, tomorrow, whatever, but it’s survival at this point. Only a few more weeks...

Thankfully, we are in our last week of school at home. My wife, god bless her, has been teaching our middle school boys math by taking time off of her WFH to learn the lessons and sit down with them. She’s even learning physics to help our high schooler. Math was never my strong suit.

Me: how is your history essay going?

Child: I am now at level 9 of Am ity Arena and playing 6 primary characters.

Me: Ummm... what does that have to do with history?

Child: you left me in my room with an iPad and high speed internet all day, what do you expect.

The only schedule we tried for was to wake them up at 9:00 and try to have them in bed by 11:00. I didn’t want to completely throw the schedule out the window. It is nice, though, not to have to wake up at 6:00 to make lunches and get kids out the door.

Thanks. I appreciate that. He’s in his last week of school, and only has one more assignment and then he’s through (probably forever) with physics. We’ll see how it goes.

That is good. I kind of figured it was going in a slightly different direction...

I figured that the schedule setting up and planning and preparation were going to take up all the time and leave none left for the actual subjects...

That’s better than the report I get from a friend of ours that teaches middle school history. She said the first few weeks weren’t bad. The only students that missed assignments were the same ones that typically missed assignments before.

Then the state announced that the kids wouldn’t be going back this school year and that the schools couldn’t hold kids back (which requires an act of God to do in normal years). Now she says less than a third of the kids tune into the online lectures and even fewer are turning in assignments.

I’m thankful that we’re only dealing with K and 1 here, not anything more advanced; we’d figure it out I’m sure, but it’s been a lot as it is. We’ve got 4 weeks left including this one.

That’s a bold schedule. My kids roll out of bed around 1030. We had to pull bedtime back to 1130PM this week so they get good rest for finals. I have no idea what we will do when school ends.

Four more weeks? Dang. I read that some school districts gave up early because parents were getting stressed out and kids weren’t doing the work anyway.

I think I’m going to try to keep the boys on some sort of schedule. My high schooler is getting himself up at 8:30 to go running, since he wants to be in shape for marching band in the fall. The middle schoolers would p robably sleep til noon if we let them, but I don’t want that to happen. Sat/Sun will remain sleep days.

Ugh, well, we would normally be in until mid-june, so we got a solid two weeks lopped off. We also didn’t do April vacation, because why
